Course description

Rationale
Long consecutive is a mode that comes handy in many settings and prevents interruptions of speakers. With the right preparation and techniques, accuracy and precision can be observed even when the interpreter is required to interpret long accounts.

Goal
In this one-day course, interpreters will be introduced to the long consecutive mode, techniques and exercises to hone their short-long consecutive skills. In addition, technology relevant to consecutive will be shared to augment skills and present an alternative to traditional methods.

Objectives
Participants will:

  • review techniques needed to perform in long consec mode
  • practise targeted drills to hone consec subskills
  • use smartpens to augment their memory capacity explore the use of tablets as a paperless notepad

Cost

  • Early bird: USD 200 (till March 15th)
  • Regular rate: USD 220 (starting March 16th)

Accommodation

A special rate is negotiated for training participants at Kellogg West: $95 for a single room and $99 for a double room plus tax per night (including breakfast). In order to get the discount for accommodation, please mention "Lexica-Cultural Bridges".

Meals:Refreshments will be provided during coffee breaks. Lunch is included in the course fee.

Trainers

Ms. Maha El-Metwally is a conference interpreter who works for a wide range of international organizations, including the European Institutions and the United Nations. After an MA in interpreter training from the University of Geneva, she developed a course on technology for interpreters which she successfully offered in the United Kingdom, Taipei, Hong Kong, Panama, Buenos Aires and Cairo. She is a member of AIIC, the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIoL) and the American Translators Association (ATA). She is also a Board member and member of the Admissions Committee of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI). She is associated with a number of universities both in the UK and abroad where she offers training and professionalization talks.

Ms. Darinka Mangino is a conference and court interpreter. She holds a Master in Advanced Studies for Interpreting Trainers from Université de Genève, Switzerland; a PGC in Forensic Linguistics from Aston University, United Kingdom and a University Degree in Conference Interpreting from Instituto Superior de Interpretes y Traductores, Mexico City. She is a member of AIIC and CMIC. Darinka Mangino is the founder of Lexica Aula Virtual para Interpretes.
